Troubleshooting

Fixes for the app not starting, meetings not detected, odd names, a missing far side, updates, and where the log is.

The app does not start

If the mark never appears, or the app hangs at launch, the cause is often the Mac's Reminders service. It can stall for hours waiting on iCloud's synced settings, and Merriweather's Reminders calls wait on it.

Current builds give Reminders 15 seconds, then carry on. They write "Reminders is not answering" to the log, and list sync stays paused until Reminders answers.

To clear the stall, open Terminal in the affected macOS account and run:

killall remindd syncdefaultsd

Then open Merriweather again. If it keeps happening, sign out of the account and back in, or restart.

No meeting was detected

Open Settings. Under Meetings, Detection now says what Merriweather sees: a meeting window, or no meeting window.

  • Grant Screen Recording. It lets Merriweather see meeting windows in the background. It takes effect after you relaunch the app.
  • Grant Accessibility. It lets Merriweather read Zoom's Meeting menu.
  • Both are under Privacy & Security in System Settings. Settings in Merriweather shows each one with a Request button.
  • Detection covers Zoom, Microsoft Teams, FaceTime, and Google Meet in a browser. The microphone must also be in use.
  • Check that Remember meetings automatically is on and tracking is not paused.
  • If you stopped a meeting, it will not restart until that meeting's window closes. Use Listen and Remember to start it by hand.

Names appear in transcripts that nobody said

Known Terms help the speech engine spell names correctly. Sometimes an engine writes a name into silence. The live view does not use your terms, and the final pass is checked against a plain one when a name turns up three or more times.

If a name still appears where it should not, archive that term in Known Terms, then open the meeting in Knowledge and choose Reprocess with current engines. Reprocessing needs the audio to have been kept.

If an invitee shows as an email address, sign in under Calendar, on the Directory row in Settings, so their name can be looked up.

The far side of a call is missing

If the other people are missing from the text, Merriweather cannot hear the sound the Mac plays. You will see a notice, "I can't hear the other side". Open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security, and allow System Audio Recording for Merriweather. Start the next meeting after you do.

For a meeting already missing the far side, choose Reprocess with current engines. This helps only when the audio is there.

After an update

Quit Merriweather, replace it in Applications, and open it again. Do not quit during a meeting. Wait until the panel says Remembered.

Each macOS account runs its own copy until it quits and reopens. Quit and reopen in each account that uses it.

If Settings offers Update the skill under Assistants, choose it.

Where the log is

Settings, under Advanced / Debug, has Open diagnostics log. The file is diagnostics.log in the Logs folder inside the Merriweather folder in Application Support. It holds key events, including the titles of meetings. It does not hold window titles, transcript text, or audio. It is cleared once it passes about 2 MB.
